Mall in Kuching Throws Away 1,500 Bowls of Laksa Sarawak After Setting Record

Sarawak’s Plaza Merdeka recently entered the Malaysia Book of Records for their attempt to create ‘The Biggest Bowl of Laksa Sarawak’. The bowl contained an equivalent of 1,500 bowls of laksa, which the mall had intended to throw away. According to the event organizer Debra Sim, the custom-made bowl was thrown away because it was “unhealthy for human consumption”.

However, news about the mall’s plan to discard the large amount of laksa quickly spread among the locals and many unhappy people criticised the organisers for wasting food that could have fed hundreds of people.

Despite the numerous protests about the mall’s food wastage following this event, according to the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation, Malaysians waste up to 15,000 tonnes of food every day! And this includes 3,000 tonnes of food that can still be consumed! How ironic is that?

Although Plaza Merdeka continued to receive complaints, the mall’s Facebook page did announce that they will be giving out 1,500 bowls of freshly-cooked laksa Sarawak today! So what are you waiting for, Kuching-ites? Go get your free bowl of laksa now!

As for the rest of us, we’ll have to make do with laksa Sarawak stalls in our neighbourhood for now. What are some of your favourites? Also, do you think the mall could have handled this better? Do comment below and share with us!
