This New Study Reveals Which Ride Hailing App Offers the Cheapest Fare in Malaysia

Gone are the days where you need to queue in long lines or wait for a copious amount of time just to get a taxi. Thanks to the advancements in technology and the invention of smartphones, we can now hail a ride just with a touch of a button. Ride-hailing apps are blossoming all over the world as we speak including in Malaysia. We’re now spoilt for choice with the likes of Grab and Uber. Meanwhile in America, Lyft is predominantly more popular thanks to its star-studded marketing campaign.

It has been a whirlwind of drama for both ride-hailing drivers and users following the legalization issues and protests by existing taxi drivers. Well, we could all now sigh in relief as the Malaysian cabinet has given its approval to legalize ride sharing services in the country. So, you can expect to see a rapid growth in this industry in years to come.

So, before you make your choice on which hailing-ride you’d take today, has it ever occurred to you which offers the cheaper fares? Well a study recently conducted by iPrice has revealed which ride-hailing app offers the cheapest fare. The study was conducted in major Southeast Asian countries and were compared between the top two industry big guns – Grab and Uber along with local taxis on various components and price points.

Based on the findings, it can be deduced that ride-hailing services are cheaper across the six countries. In Malaysia, Uber offers the cheapest fare for long distances (20km) while Grab is cheaper for shorter distances (5km).

For example, if a Malaysian is travelling during regular hours around the city center with an average time of 16 minutes for 5km, it will cost RM8 for Grab and RM8.40 for Uber. For conventional taxis however, it’ll cost RM10.20 for the same ride. As for long-distance trips, Uber is more cost efficient. It will cost the passenger RM22.70 for a 20km journey while Grab an conventional taxis charges RM28.90 and RM27.10 respectively.

However, in other countries, only one ride-hailing app offers a far more superior rate than its rival. Uber is the cheapest in Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam for both short and long distance trips while in Singapore and Philippines, Grab appears to be the cheaper option for both distances.
