Now that Donald J. Trump is the 45th president of the United States, here are some things he's said that might affect us over here in South East Asia. Also, update your slang words to exclude post-Brexit and include post-Trump. We're living in a post-Trump world now. Everything is great again. Here are some promises he's made on the campaign trail that will affect us Malaysians, bonkers and otherwise: The statement was released by his campaign and Trump is quoted in the statement as saying that a sizable segment of the Muslim population has a "great hatred towards Americans". The statement continues, "Where this hatred comes from and why, we will have to determine. Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life." – TWP He has been highly critical of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deals and has been quoted as saying it is "nothing but trouble". Malaysia is a signatory to the TPP that has been seven years in negotiation. The 30 chapters in the agreement aims to "promote economic growth; support the creation and retention of jobs; enhance innovation, productivity and competitiveness; raise living standards; reduce poverty in the signatories' countries; and promote transparency, good governance, and enhanced labor and environmental protections". Oddly, China was not a signatory to this and we've just made strategic new partnerships with China. Maybe our PM knew something all along. In a tweet he says that global warming was "created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive". We're signatory to the Paris Agreement and his influence could break the deal altogether. Malaysia has one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world and our coral reefs – one of the main draws for tourism – is in danger. If the Paris Agreement falls through, we could be looking at worse environmental issues in the future. Our PM has returned from China with deals amounting to US$34 billion (RM136 billion) while Donald Trump has pledged to label China a currency manipulator and impose punitive tariffs on Chinese goods. He has openly accused China of stealing jobs and said that China has been using America as a "piggy bank to rebuild China". Donald Trump's policies have focused on isolationism and his "America First" rhetoric. No clue if this will have a direct impact on their relationship with Malaysia, but it doesn't bode well that most of Trump's vitriol has been towards our current number one ally, China. If it comes down to a choice between America and China, we're not sure who will be on the winning side.
