Drake and Rihanna Top Spotify’s Most Streamed Artist of 2016

Spotify revealed its annual top list that takes a look back at the artists, albums, track and moments that made 2016 such a magnificent year in music. Drake dominated the most streamed track and album for 2016, and Rihanna was crowned most streamed female artist for the second year in a row.

“Drake has been unstoppable this year – he’s a true global superstar,” said Stefan Blom, Spotify’s Chief Content and Chief Strategy Officer. “With the top album and the top song this year, as well as his successful Summer Sixteen tour, Drake continues to engage his fans in a way that only Drake can; it’s no surprise he is dominating the music industry.”

Fans also discovered more new music and artists than ever before in 2016. In Malaysia, The Chainsmokers were the most loved artist while Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande took the crown as the most streamed male and female artist for 2016. "Faded" by Alan Walker proved to be a universal favourite as it was the biggest song in the country and no surprise, Purpose by Justin Bieber topped the list for most popular album of the entire year!

Zayn became the top breakout artist, and Discover Weekly was streamed more than 9 billion times this year. This is Drake's second year in a row as the world's most streamed artist, receiving more than 4.7 billion streams – more than double the 1.8 billion he saw last year. More impressively, Drake is the most streamed artist of all time on Spotify with over 8.7 billion streams.

Beyond all, Drake saw superlative success across the American and international charts, topping tallies for top artists, most streamed male artists, most streamed tracks with "One Dance (feat. WizKid and Kyla)" and most streamed albums with Views. Drake was also the top artist in hip-hop and pop genres and his song "One Dance" was Spotify's top breakup song.

Drake also charted the most songs on Pandora’s “Top Thumb Hundred 2016” list, with 14 of the most-liked songs of the year.
