A series of fire incidents at Johor Bahru’s Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) back in October rocked the nation and served as a wakeup call for the authorities to hold inspection of old hospital buildings that have passed its prime. The horrifying incident caused six people to perish and traumatised hundreds of others.

Today, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr. S. Subramaniam revealed the main reason the hospital caught fire, based on the full report received by the ministry. The main cause of the incident was due to a burnt capacitor in one of the ceiling lights, which damaged the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU). “In addition, it is also likely that there were flammable materials placed under the lighting, which caused the fire to spread quickly,” Subramaniam told New Straits Times.

Subramaniam added that the government has formed a special commission to review all the reports submitted by relevant agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department, Public Works Department and Energy Commission. “The commission will also review certain processes within the ministry and those who have been given the responsibility to maintain public hospitals in the country.”

The HSA is currently undergoing some repair works due to the damage from the fire and is expected to operate again next month. A safety audit on hospitals that are more than 50 years old was also carried out following the fire incident. The audit report is expected to be completed and submitted to the ministry next month.
