I will never work with PAS, says S’gor rep now with Amanah

Morib assemblyman Hasnul Baharuddin says he'll never forget being called ‘traitor’ and being suspended over Selangor MB issue in 2014.

Hasnul-Baharuddin-pas-1PETALING JAYA: Labelled a “traitor” by members of Selangor PAS, a state legislator who quit the party two years ago to join Amanah says he will never work with the Islamist outfit again.

“I will never extend my cooperation to them. I hate them,” Morib assemblyman Hasnul Baharuddin told FMT.

He said that he worked closely with fellow Pakatan Harapan (PH) parties PPBM, PKR and DAP in local community programmes, but not with PAS.

Hasnul fell out with the party in 2014 when he and PAS’ Ulu Kelang assemblyman Saari Sungib openly declared their support to PKR president and new Kajang assemblywoman Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to be the menteri besar.

In making the stand they had sided with 13 PKR and 15 DAP state reps in a bid to remove then menteri besar Khalid Ibrahim from office.

The duo’s actions saw them being suspended for a year from PAS in October that year.

Saari was previously reported as saying that PAS had given his family members a hard time too, by suspending his wife and children from the women and youth wings at the Ulu Kelang divisional level.

Both Hasnul and Saari joined Amanah in 2015, following the lead of PAS national leaders such as Mohamad Sabu and Salahudin Ayub who had resigned from the Islamist party.

“PAS supporters in Morib called me ‘pengkhianat’ (traitor) for backing Wan Azizah, in defiance of PAS’ wishes.

“They have come to their realisation now that what I did three years ago was not a ‘big sin’ that I should be condemned for,” Hasnul said.

He also claims that the division and members in Morib had been “inactive” since he left and most local support had veered towards PH.

He said some PAS supporters thought that party president Abdul Hadi Awang’s decision to weaken ties with fellow components in the Pakatan Rakyat, the now-defunct opposition coalition which was a precursor to PH, was wrong.

“And then he was seen to be friendly with Umno by joining a gathering for Rohingyas,” he said, claiming that it had made PAS lose support among the grassroots.

Hasnul said he would leave it to Amanah’s leadership to decide whether he would be their candidate in a three-cornered fight to defend Morib against PAS and Barisan Nasional (BN) in the 14th general election (GE14).

“But I can say Amanah will be standing in Morib. This place is our stronghold because we have 16 branches here,” he said.

During the last general election in May 2013, Hasnul won Morib as a PAS candidate by a slim margin of 766 votes against Barisan Nasional’s Hasiman Sidom. He had obtained 15,016 votes while Hasiman, from Umno, got 14,250 votes.

Morib is one of the state seats under the Kuala Langat parliamentary constituency now held by PKR’s Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid. The other state seats there are Sijangkang and Teluk Datuk.
