Rahman: Anwar’s supporters won’t want Mahathir as PM

The BN strategic communications director says supporters have sacrificed a lot for the jailed opposition leader in the last 20 years.

rahman-dahlan-mahathirKUALA LUMPUR: The decision of Pakatan Harapan (PH) to name Dr Mahathir Mohamad as its candidate for prime minister if it wins the next general election is not going to go down well with hardcore supporters of Anwar Ibrahim, said Barisan Nasional strategic communications director Abdul Rahman Dahlan.

“Their blood, sweat and tears, and personal sacrifice in championing Anwar over the 20 years he was oppressed by Mahathir have been dismissed in the blink of an eye,” he said in a statement on his Twitter account, @mpkotabelud, today.

Rahman said it came as no surprise that there were PH supporters who were angry and had questioned why the former prime minister and former deputy prime minister had forgiven each other so easily after having traded insults for over 20 years.

“Don’t think that the question of Tun M and Anwar burying the hatchet is only an issue between two individual politicians.

“In reality, the personal strife between Mahathir and Anwar since 1998 has caused upheaval and paralysed the stability of the country,” he said.

He said the actions of the two leaders had surprised the people because it was merely for political interests that they forgave each other and the people were forced to accept that.

Rahman said the people had to endure demonstrations, riots and seditious campaigns since 1998 and, as a result, the economy was affected and political stability was jeopardised.

“One political crisis after another erupted over the 20 years that Tun M and Anwar engaged in their dispute.

“For the sake of politics, they went to the extent of gambling with the stability of the country and destroying the political careers of many politicians,” he said.

Rahman said the people, especially the supporters of Anwar, would not be fooled because they realised that all of it was just a political show.

PH yesterday announced that Mahathir, who is PPBM chairman, was its candidate for prime minister if it wins the next general election.

It also announced that PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was the candidate for deputy prime minister.
