Sabah PH, Warisan almost done with seat negotiations

Sabah DAP secretary Chan Foong Hin says it's now up to PKR and Warisan to reach an agreement.

KOTA KINABALU: Seat negotiations for the 14th general election (GE14) between Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) are going well, with only a few issues left to be ironed out, says Sabah DAP secretary Chan Foong Hin.

“There are some seats which Sabah PKR and Warisan are still lobbying for.

“However, Sabah DAP has finalised the seat distribution with Warisan and we are confident our ally in PH will also come to an agreement soon on the issue,” he said at a press conference here today.

He also confirmed that the party would be contesting in two seats in the interior instead of three.

“We have given up the Sook state seat to Warisan, leaving us with only the Tenom parliamentary seat and Bingkor state seat.”

The decision, which was made about two weeks ago, led to dissatisfaction among DAP supporters in Sook. They were said to be unhappy as the party had invested a lot of resources and energy into building its support base there over the past five years.

However, Chan said the party was still committed to helping its allies, including Warisan, win the seat from Barisan Nasional (BN).

The seat is currently held by BN’s Ellron Angin, who is also Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) vice-president.

Meanwhile, when asked about Sabah PH forming pacts with other local opposition parties, Chan said it was possible.

“Even if there are any talks between Sabah DAP and other local parties, it would be with individual parties, though it looks very difficult at the moment,” he said.

He dismissed any chance of Sabah PH having talks with local opposition alliance Gabungan Sabah, saying the two sides were on “different pages when it comes to ideologies and principles”.

“I know Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president Yong Teck Lee has accused Sabah PH of not being willing to talk with Gabungan Sabah. The problem is, Gabungan is not even on DAP’s radar. We talk about different things, so how can we cooperate?”
