Remember the critically acclaimed Thai movie Bad Genius? The movie tells the tale of a group of high school students who planned an elaborate scheme to cheat during their exams including an international test for university admissions.

The group started out small by doing it with their classmates and ended up conducting ‘cheating classes’ to students from other schools as well. A lot of money from lazy wealthy kids were involved but in the end, they all got busted.

Just when we thought things like this will most unlikely occur, it actually happened in real-life and not too far from home.

If you guys have watched this movie, we can all agree it's one of the coolest movies ever.
In Singapore, a group of O-levels students were busted after they were caught in an elaborate cheating scheme during their O-levels exam.

But there’s a twist in their story, instead of having a super genius leading the ring, their tuition teachers were on it too!

The case happened back in 2016, where all six students who were Chinese nationals sneakily brought smuggled their smartphones and Bluetooth devices by taping them underneath their clothes.

Last time we wanted to cheat using our cellphone also takut-takut.
The answers were then given by their tutor through skin-coloured earpieces.

Not only that, one of their tutors – Tan Jia Yan even went to the extent of posing as a private candidate so that she could stake the exam with them and Facetimed other tutors through her carefully concealed phone the questions that they received.

Walaoweh, so sophisticated! But, how did they get caught?

The high-stakes scheme was foiled during the fifth day of the examinations after an invigilator heard transmission sounds coming from one of the students and immediately reported that person.
The invigilator got elephant ears, is it?
The student was allowed to finish his paper and was then taken to a holding room when the truth finally unraveled.

The stint involved four tutors including a principle from Zeus Education Centre.

The whole scheme started when a China man named Mr Dong Xin introduced the six students to the tuition centre. Dong then signed an agreement with the principle, Poh Yuan Nie, where she would receive SGD8,000 (RM23,747.88) in deposit and SGD1,000 (RM2,968.48) in admission fees for each student.

But there’s a catch – she must refund the money if the students failed their exams.

So did he end up getting his refund?
The case is currently on trial. To read more about it, click here.
