Guan Eng to seek consent for dissolution on Monday

Penang CM says he will meet Governor at 8.30am, after previously saying dissolution would be after an executive council meeting.

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng will seek an audience with the governor, Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas, on Monday for consent to dissolve the Penang state legislative assembly.

Announcing this today, Lim said the meeting would take place at 8.30am at Seri Mutiara, the Yang Dipertua Negeri’s official residence.

“An announcement will be made later after the meeting.

“That is all I can say for now until I have an audience with the governor,” he said in a press conference today. With him were his deputy, P Ramasamy, and Lim’s political secretary Wong Hon Wai.

Yesterday, he had said that he would seek the governor’s consent after holding a meeting of the state executive council, and would then advise the speaker of the state legislative assembly on the date for the dissolution.

“We will inform everything after the state exco meeting is held, but it is definitely next week,” Lim was reported to have said.

Parliament stands dissolved from today, as well as four state assemblies. Two other states have also announced receiving consent for dissolution.

Earlier today the Election Commission said it was unable to set the dates for the nomination of candidates and for polling as notice of dissolution has been received from only four states.

Two more states announced today that they had received concent from their Rulers, bringing the total to eight. Twelve states are eligible to hold state elections. Sarawak has traditionally held separate elections to its state assembly, and voters there will only choose their MPs when the general election is held soon.
