In case you didn't know, the Pulitzer Prize is an award for achievements made in newspaper, magazine, online journalism, literature and musical composition in the United States.
So how on earth did a rap artist win an award like that?
Lamar received the esteemed award under the 'Music' category for his 2017 album, 'DAMN.', which was described as "a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life".
In the album, which also won him five Grammy awards in January, he highlights his struggles growing up in his hometown Compton as well as the political turmoil that is affecting America today.
Although he lost the 'Album of the Year' to Bruno Mars, his story earned him critical success and more than a million copies in sales in the U.S. alone.
His most recent project curating the original soundtrack for Black Panther also received critical success along with the Marvel film.
This is indeed a milestone for hip hop music as a whole. Congratulations, Kendrick Lamar! Now you make us want to revisit your lyrics all over again.
