As speculation mounts that Parliament will be dissolved this week, the PH presidential council will meet on Tuesday to discuss using a single logo for GE14.
GEORGE TOWN: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng says the issue of which common logo Pakatan Harapan (PH) component parties will use to contest the 14th general election (GE14) will be revealed next week.
He said the PH presidential council would meet next Tuesday and the matter will be raised then.
Lim, who is also PH deputy president, was responding to a question on rumours that the opposition coalition’s candidates will use the PKR logo to contest in GE14.
“I can only say this, we will announce next week. (PH chairman) Dr Mahathir Mohamad has announced that PPBM and Amanah will use the PKR logo… I think we must have several discussions,” the Penang chief minister said at a press conference in Komtar today.
PH is made up of PKR, DAP, Amanah and PPBM.
The coalition has yet to be formally registered by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) which cited issues related to PPBM’s legality for holding up the decision.
Last week, PH vice-president Salahuddin Ayub said the presidential council had decided to use either the PKR or Amanah logo in GE14.
He said the council thought this would be the best option as PPBM had been barred from using its logo.
As for DAP’s logo, Salahuddin gave only a short comment, “not using”, but declined to elaborate.
On March 23, RoS director-general Surayati Ibrahim said PPBM was holding back the PH registration, as the new party was required to submit minutes of division, branch and central meetings as well as the party’s financial statement.
PH parties made the application to the RoS on July 28 but have yet to hear from the agency. They wrote again on Aug 21, asking for a meeting to discuss the application, but again received no response.
PH sent RoS a notice on Oct 25, asking it to respond to the application within 14 days of receiving the letter or face legal action.
PH submitted its draft constitution to the RoS on July 24 and its logo on July 28.
The High Court will hear tomorrow PH’s bid to compel the RoS to register the opposition pact.
