PKR to contest at least 15 seats in Sabah

Sabah PKR chairman Christina Liew says the party may get more seats as talks with Warisan are still in progress.

Sabah PH chairman Christina Liew says half of the PKR candidates will be new faces, with three youth and three women candidates.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah PKR has confirmed it will contest six parliamentary seats and nine state seats in the May 9 polls.

Its chairman Christina Liew said the full list of candidates was expected to be announced in one or two days.

“There are still some seats being negotiated with Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan). We expect to resolve them soon. If there are any changes, it will be an increase in the number of seats for PKR, not decrease.

“The candidates will be revealed before the launch of Sabah Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) third manifesto in Sandakan on April 21 by PH deputy president and election coordinator Muhyiddin Yassin,” she told a press conference here today.

According to Liew, about half of the 15 candidates to be fielded by PKR will be new faces, and there will be three youth and three women candidates.

Sabah PH is made up of PKR, DAP and Amanah. However, talks on an electoral pact with Warisan have so far only involved PKR and DAP.

The state seats allocated to PKR are Api-Api, Kuala Penyu, Matunggong, Moyog, Tempasuk, Inanam, Kadamaian, Tamparuli and Karanaan.

As for the parliament seats, Sabah PKR will contest in Ranau, Pensiangan, Tuaran, Tawau, Putatan and Beaufort.

PKR fielded candidates in 43 state seats in the previous election, winning in Api-Api, Matunggong, Moyog, Inanam and Tamparuli, Klias and Kadamaian.

However, defections among its assemblymen left the party with only the Api-Api and Inanam seats in the last state assembly.

Penampang, the sole parliamentary seat won by PKR in 2013 out of the 19 it contested, was also lost after its MP Darell Leiking crossed over to Warisan where he is now the deputy president.

Liew has confirmed she will defend her Api-Api seat while her deputy Mustapha Sakmud told FMT it was almost certain he would stand in Tempasuk.

Liew, who is also Sabah PH chairman, said Amanah state chairman Hamza Abdullah would meet Warisan president Shafie Apdal soon to discuss seat distribution between the two parties.

“Since Sabah PH has already agreed on seat allocations among us, it is up to the individual parties to discuss (their share) with Warisan,” she said.

It was reported that Amanah intended to contest in two state seats and two parliamentary seats in Sabah, but Warisan is understood to be keen on them as well.

The third party in the Sabah PH alliance, DAP, has already announced it will stand in three parliamentary seats and seven state seats.

The party will contest the Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan and Tenom federal seats, and the state seats of Luyang, Likas, Sri Tanjong, Elopura, Tanjung Papat, Bingkor and Kepayan.
