PETALING JAYA: Police will seek a warrant to arrest Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Yunos for investigation into six cases after he failed to turn himself in today while making conflicting statements about his intentions.
Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief Fadzil Ahmat said the police would step up efforts to locate Jamal, leader of the Umno-linked Red Shirt political action movement which came to prominence in 2015-2017.
“Police have conducted their investigations into cases involving Jamal. To date, there are six cases involving Jamal, besides three cases that he was charged with while he was at the Ampang Puteri Medical Centre,” Fadzil said.
“The police have given him enough time to cooperate but he still failed to respond appropriately. In fact, he goes back and forth with his statements which have gone viral.”
Jamal went missing from the private hospital last Friday, hours after he had been charged with three offences while he was undergoing medical treatment. He had been offered RM3,000 bail on each charge but left the building while bail documents were being prepared.
One charge was for causing a public nuisance by smashing beer bottles with a sledgehammer in front of the Selangor state secretariat building last year, which carries a fine of RM400 on conviction. Two other charges related to firearms and rioting.
Earlier today Jamal had said he did not show up at the police station because he felt he was a victim of certain people who had ordered the police to “target him in any way possible”.
He believed the police were under pressure from the Pakatan Harapan federal government, and urged Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to guarantee he would not be mistreated when he presented himself.
The Jamal case has led to the police coming under criticism from Penang DAP’s Ramkarpal Singh, the incoming MP for Bukit Gelugor, who said today: “This nonsense must stop. Jamal must be arrested and he must be arrested now.”
He questioned whether the police force was “so hopeless” that it could not even arrest a person like Jamal for the purpose of investigations.
