Amanah MP says his three bills are vital and he will exercise his right as a member of Parliament to present them.
KUALA LUMPUR: Parit Buntar MP Mujahid Yusof Rawa intends to meet Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin to discuss the fate of three private member bills.
He said his three bills on criminalising hate speech, equality and the National Harmony Council had been submitted but there had not been any response.
“I have submitted these bills for the current Parliament session but there is no response.
“Looks like I have to knock on the speaker’s door and find out the outcome myself. I intend to meet the speaker on the matter,” he said at the forum “Let the Mob do the Job: A discussion on freedom of expression and religion online in Asia”, which was held here today.
Mujahid, who is a vice-president of Pakatan Harapan (PH) member party Amanah, said his three bills were vital and that he would exercise his right as a member of Parliament to present them.
“The first bill proposes criminalising hate speeches that may demean a certain race or religion. I am also suggesting that religious insults be criminalised. Freedom of expression does not give you a licence to insult others.
“The Equality Bill will simply complement Article 8 of the Federal Constitution and to pave the way for the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination.
“The National Harmony Council Bill will propose that a council be formed to serve as a form of mediation between parties.”
