PM’s aide: Opposition politicising re-delineation to distract from woes

The prime minister’s press secretary says the process is free from political interference.

Tengku-Sariffuddin-Tengku-Ahmad-opposition-mengundiKUALA LUMPUR: The opposition’s politicisation of the electoral boundary re-delineation process and exploitation of the legal system to stop it is an attempt to distract from their fading popularity, said Tengku Sariffuddin Tengku Ahmad, the press secretary to the prime minister.

He said that Malaysia, like other democracies, routinely carried out re-delineation exercises ahead of elections to reflect population growth and the process was entirely normal, free from political interference and managed by the independent Election Commission.

“The reality is that Malaysia’s judiciary is free and fair. Decisions frequently go against the government, and that is a matter of public record.

“The opposition only complains when decisions go against them. It is a shame that they choose to run down their own country internationally just for their own political gain,” he said in a statement here today.
