Alam Indah Services Sdn Bhd says it has obtained a court injunction in its challenge against MBPP’s termination of its parking system management contract.
GEORGE TOWN: Perkhidmatan Alam Indah Sdn Bhd has secured a court injunction to stop Penang Island City Council (MBPP) from enforcing the termination of its contract to manage the island’s parking system.
The contract, signed in January 2014, was supposed to run until May this year but MBPP terminated it early this week after accusing the company of not paying rental arrears amounting to RM6 million.
Speaking to reporters today, Alam Indah general manager Junid Abdussalam said the company applied for the injunction at the Penang High Court on Wednesday – two days after MBPP terminated its contract.
“On the same date, Justice Rosilah Yop allowed our application for the injunction,” he told a press conference here today.
Alam Indah named MBPP as the defendant in the application.
Junid said it would be business as usual, and Alam Indah would continue to manage the parking system services on the island in accordance with the terms and conditions of the agreement.
“Our agents will continue to sell the parking coupons and monthly passes as usual,” he said.
He reminded the public that parking coupons, monthly passes and any other services related to the parking system not authorised by his company were invalid.
City Mayor Maimunah Mohd Sharif, in announcing the termination of the contract, had said the parking coupons issued by the company could be used until Dec 31 this year.
She added that the coupon sellers were also allowed to sell their remaining stocks until Feb 28.
Meanwhile, MBPP treasury revenue unit head Suhaida Kamalul Ariffin confirmed receiving the High Court order and said the council would abide by it.
She said pending the conclusion of the court action, the council would stop selling its own coupons.
Those who had bought the council’s coupons should just keep them until further notice, she said.
