Pahang regent saddened by Mahfuz’s ‘unethical’ speech on sultan

Tengku-Abdullah-mahfuzKUANTAN: Pahang regent Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah has expressed disappointment with Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar over a recent speech he made comparing the health of his father to that of Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Tengku Abdullah said the remarks by the former PAS leader which have since gone viral on social media were unethical.

“I don’t want to comment further, but if we listen and watch the speech, it is unethical for someone who is slightly younger than my father.

“As Malays, we are taught to respect our elders, what more a king,” he told reporters today as quoted by Bernama.

This comes after a Pahang-based organisation lodged a police report against Mahfuz yesterday, urging for him to be investigated for insulting the sultan.

Mahfuz, in his speech defending Mahathir’s eligibility to lead the government despite his age, had referred to a video clip showing a bedridden Sultan Ahmad Shah marking his 87th birthday.

Tengku Abdullah said he was saddened by the act of those who recorded and spread the video clip for the public to watch.

He said it was worse that the recording was made by those within the palace.

When contacted, Mahfuz said he was merely responding to claims by Umno leaders that Mahathir is too old to assume the prime minister’s post again.

“So I was giving my view that age is not a barrier for someone to become a leader,” he told FMT.

Mahfuz, in his speech, had said even the sultan of Pahang with his poor health could still assume the role of a monarch.

He questioned the groups who lodged police reports against him, saying they were backed by Umno interests.

He added that it was not his intention to insult the ruler.

“If that has made the regent angry, I would like to apologise.”
