We don't have to win 60 seats to form government, says Warisan president Shafie Apdal ahead of visit by PH deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin.
KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah chief Shafie Apdal is dropping broad hints that his party is working out a seat arrangement deal with opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan (PH).
While remaining coy about talks with PH, Shafie said that Warisan did not intend to contest in all 60 state seats.
“To us winning the election is important,” he said, adding that the party would contest in a majority of seats but only in areas it was certain its candidates stood a good chance of winning.
Shafie said Warisan had no intention, for example, to contest the Api Api state seat now held by PKR’s Christina Liew.
”We don’t have to win 60 seats to form the government. So, it is a matter of optimising our resources.
“But of course, we will contest in an ample number of seats,” he told the media on Monday.
When asked if Warisan was in negotiations with PH – comprising PKR, DAP, Amanah and PPBM – Shafie said: “We would be happy if they focused on winning the peninsula.”
Liew, who is also Sabah PH chief, had said that the opposition pact had finalised a seat arrangement deal among themselves and would be trying to hammer out an agreement.
She said Sabah PH officials would be briefing PPBM president Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also one of three PH deputy presidents, during his two-day visit to Sabah from Tuesday.
However, Liew added that working out a deal with other parties was not easy as there would be overlapping claims to field candidates in the 25 parliamentary and 60 state constituencies in Sabah.
She said the best they could hope for was to minimise the number of multi-cornered contests against the ruling Barisan Nasional.
