800 tourists stranded after Langkawi SkyCab breaks down

LANGKAWI: About 800 tourists and officials were stranded after the Langkawi SkyCab cable car service was disrupted this afternoon.

The public relations officer for the Kedah Fire and Rescue Department Mohamad Mustakim Mukhtar told Bernama 50 firemen had been sent to the cable car station while others were stationed at Gunung Machinchang, which stands at 713 metres.

A 16-man strong team was sent to Oriental Village, Teluk Burau, after being informed of the incident at 6.53pm.

Fire and Rescue Department personnel helped the workers there to ferry spare parts for the repair job up the hill.

The repair works are expected to take two or three hours, Mustakim added.

NST Online reported at least 50 passengers were trapped in two gondola lifts, with 800 others stranded at the peak of Gunung Machinchang station.

The incident occurred after 6pm as the visitors were waiting for their turn to leave the Top Station, which is located 708m above sea level, it said.

It said two of the gondola lifts were left suspended near the Top Station.
