On Wednesday, Tun Dr. Mahathir chaired the first ever weekly Cabinet meeting at Perdana Putra where he announced that all cabinet ministers will get a 10 percent salary cut on their basic salary.
According to Tun Mahathir, the cut is part of the new government’s cost-cuttings measures to “help the country's finances.”
"This has been a practice of mine. I also did the same thing when I became prime minister in 1981," Tun told The Star.
The cut came after it was reported that our national debt has breached the RM1 trillion mark.
Apart from the salary cut, the Prime Minister also made a few major announcements:
- Existing mega projects will be reviewed and probably scrapped
- Fuel prices will remain unchanged until further notice
- Four government bodies - Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), National Professors Council, Federal Village Development and Security Committee (JKKP), and Special Affairs Department (JASA) - will be disbanded
